Just like Topps, each Fleer vending box had 500 cards, but each Fleer vending box was labeled with a number (either 1, 2, 3, or 4). The boxes were packed in such a way, so that if you were to take one box of each number and collate the cards, you were guaranteed to get three whole 660-card sets. Each 24 box vending case came with six of each number, meaning an entire case would produce 18 hand-collated sets.

A look back helps understand Exhibit Supply cards. J. Frank Meyer (left) of ESCO worked from offices on Printers’ Row in Chicago. This 1914 photo shows the vending card machines for “art models” against the wall. The photo was obtained from Chet Gore and appeared in Bob Schulhof’s “Penny Arcade” newsletter in 1990.
Instead of a header card with three players, the front of the machine contained six cards: Duke Snider (Brooklyn Dodger uniform), Gil McDougald, Walt Dropo, Roy Campanella, Eddie Mathews and Ted Kluszewski. Machines of this type can sell in the $800-$2,000 range and beyond, depending on the condition of the machine, the header insert, year of the machine and whether any cards are still inside. One series of cards was manufactured for the Canadian market in 1953.
